Most tile failures start below the surface. Cracked tiles, loose edges, and grout that falls apart – these problems almost always trace back to poor prep work underneath.
Before a single tile goes down, we check the subfloor. Wood subfloors in older Hammonton homes often need reinforcement. If the floor flexes, tile will crack. We add layers or replace sections until the base is solid and level.

Our process follows a set order on every job. Each step builds on the one before it. Skipping ahead or cutting corners leads to problems down the road.

Next, we dry-lay the tile. This means placing tiles in position without adhesive to plan the layout. We check alignment, spacing, and where cuts will fall. A good layout keeps cut pieces away from visible areas and centers the pattern in the room.
We use thinset mortar to bond tile to the surface. Thinset is stronger than mastic adhesive and handles moisture better. We spread it with a notched trowel to create even ridges that grip the back of each tile.
After the thinset cures, we grout the joints. We press grout into every gap, clean the surface, and seal the grout once it dries. Sealed grout resists stains and moisture.

Tile that is installed poorly shows its problems within months. Here are the issues we see most often when fixing other contractors’ work.
Cracked tiles usually mean the subfloor was not stiff enough. When the floor flexes under weight, tiles snap. We prevent this by reinforcing the subfloor and using crack isolation membranes where needed.
Lippage happens when tile edges sit higher than their neighbors. This creates an uneven surface that catches toes and looks unfinished. We avoid lippage by leveling the substrate and using tile leveling clips during installation.
Grout failure – crumbling, cracking, or discoloring – often results from mixing errors or skipping the sealing step. We mix grout to the manufacturer’s specifications and seal every joint after it cures.
Hollow spots under tile mean the thinset did not make full contact. These tiles sound different when you tap them and are more likely to crack. We back-butter large tiles and check coverage to make sure each piece bonds fully.
